Latin Dictionary App Reviews

Useless

This app simply does not work! You cant even type a search term!

L & S on the iPod...what else do you need to know?

Nothing fancy interface-wise here, but the app merits 5 stars simply because it is one of the few Latin eDictionaries out there that gives you full access to a true Latin dictionary. Moreover, Lews & Short, as stated in the description, is a great resource for medievalists, as it extends into the Late Antique period, providing meanings not found in Classical dictionaries. The app itself is simple and easy to use, with a nice, clean display for definitions. The only suggestion Id make for a new version would be an option to search only after a word is fully typed in. As it is now, each keystroke causes the program to search through its word list for matches, which can slow things down a touch. But that is only a minor quibble. Thanks to the developer for making this app and making it available at a reasonable price.

This app is great!

If you are studying latin this app will save you loads of time! The Lewis and Short dictionary is the essential dictionary for medieval latinists, and equal to other classical dictionaries. You could pay hundreds of dollars for a full physical copy of this, and to be honest, the quick interface on this electronic version is so much quicker than using a book. I have nothing but high praises for this app! Also I find the guessing feature in the search function very useful, please keep it! Thanks for an excellent app!

Careful!

Doesnt have all Latin words, nor follows some basics

Love it.

Lewis & Short is still the standard work for medievalists. This is a great app and its a lot lighter than lugging around your bound copy, which one still needs (duh!) but can use when necessary. For the price its amazing. Too bad we cant get Latham and Bradleys Arnold too.

Great Easy to Use Latin dictionary

This app is great for looking up the meanings of latin words and the guessing feature helps to narrow possibilities when youre not sure of the root youre looking for. Could we get the appendix to explain the abbreviations? Everything thing else is already perfect.

Latin Dictionary

Would be much more useful if it also translated from English to Latin! Pity. The user interface is also a little stark. This would otherwise be a very interesting dictionary for the price.

The biggest Latin dictionary at the smallest price

This is the Lewis & Short Latin dictionary, which has been *the* standard Latin-English dictionary for generations. It is by far the biggest, most complete Latin dictionary that Ive seen available for iPhone. The app is simple to use, and the text is easy to read. Use the iPhone/iPod "Settings" button to adjust the text size. The L&S often includes the corresponding Greek term in its definitions; unfortunately the Greek is printed in "betacode," that is, in Roman letters. At first I could not figure out how to scroll through the list of words, but its a simple matter of pressing the "Search" key. This is a great app at a fantastic price. Latin lovers, even serious students and scholars, will be well-pleased.

Not very helpful

First, it has a bunch of junk in the definition, if the definition is even there Second, lots of the words I look up are there, but dont have a definition. It gives the part-of-speech, but doesnt give the English meaning. Third, you cant look up the infinitive of any verb, and I dont see a way to find a verb definition at all! I just wasted 2 bux!

needs some work

The dictionary itself is great. I love the ability to read Latin "on-the-go" without having to carry an additional dictionary. However, the UI doesnt draw me in. There should definitely be a cover page. I was surprised the first time I opened the page and it was a nearly blank screen. It doesnt seem like a lot of thought went into making it feel accessible. As to the reveiwer who couldnt look up verbs, as in all Latin and Greek dictionaries, the verb form you need to look up is the first person, present tense. For example, video - not videre. I personally like all the information provided. It is a true dictionary to be used by people who read Latin, not just for people with a curiosity about the language. Decent job, I would just like to have a better interface.

Another Homerun

This app is as good as the authors Greek lexicon app, if not better. The first thing I noticed with this app was that the GUI looks more iPhone standard in comparison with the Greek lexicon--I imagine this is due to the Latin characters being standard while the Greek characters are not. Still, as with the other app, Id like to see a splash screen on boot, as well as an intro page and instructional page with an abbreviation guide. Also on both apps, the app names are too long to fit under their icons. Calling them something like Greek Lex and Latin Dic would solve that and would look better than Greek...icon and the like. In any case, this is well worth the 2 dollars its going for now, and will still be worth it when the price goes up. Buy it now.

Uugghh

I really had high hopes. 2 bucks seemed too cheap and it was. Buy the 5 dollar one. Not enough words, WAY too long defenition if its even in there. Complete epic fail! Lost 2 dollars.

???

Why the hell doesnt this app work, I type something in, press Search, AND NOTHING HAPPENS!!!.

Terrible

Worst app Ive found so far. Dont buy if youre a law student. Most words I searched for werent available.

Excellent App

Lewis and Short is a standard Latin lexicon from the end of the 19th century. I have the print form at home but it is massive. Now I can bring it with me wherever I go! Keep in mind that this is a scholarly dictionary, not a glossary. The entries are thorough, and give example quotations and citations. I am surprised some people say it did not have the words they needed. It has, I think, every word in classical Latin, and many from ecclesiastcal and medieval Latin, too. The complainers probably looked up the word in its inflected form, and were socked not to be able to find, say, "erroribus." Only flaw is that the Greek text in etymologies does not display properly.

...

One star unless you add English to Latin. Otherwise it is useless to me.

A marvelous tool badly crafted

Compiling this program from the Lewis and Short now in the public domain was a fantastic idea, and the tool is instantly and definitely worth it. I am a professional classicist and already wouldnt want to be parted from it. There are some problems in the design of the program. For instance, it narrows down possible matches after each keystroke--useful for browsing or if one isnt sure of a root, but the small keyboard-gumming delays after each stroke really diminish the pleasure of using the program. This could be easily fixed without losing browsing functionality by only searching incomplete strings on command, for instance robig* to browse the possible entries related to "robigine." Broken Greek display and lack of a homescreen make this application feel cheap and hacked together. Its worth the money by every means--but it would be nice to see this venerable lexicon treated with more respect.

Good

For the price its a good value.

They just dont get it . . .

The 1 and 2 starrers just dont understand that this is the Lewis and Short edition of the Latin language. Its not supposed to have English to Latin. It assumes you know your conjugations. The definitions and full and detailed, with much additional information helpful to philologists. If youre a high school student who does not understand with L&S is, just get a paperback dictionary and carry it around in your back pocket.

Slow on iPod

I have both Lewis & Short Dictionary apps on the store. This ones slower and more unresponsive and it is more expensive. The content seems the same however.
