Latin Dictionary is the Lewis and Short lexicon on the ancient language of Latin. It was first published in 1879 and its been in the public domain for ages and yet it remains the standard reference work for medievalists, renaissance specialists, and early modernists.

In cases where Lewis and Short do not answer a medieval usage question, J. F. Niermeyers Mediae Latinitatis Lexicon Minus often supplies an answer.

On occasion people confuse Lewis and Short (or L&S) with Liddell and Scott, its Greek counterpart, entitled A Greek-English Lexicon. That fine dictionary is also available for the iPhone.

Latin Dictionary is suitable for students of Latin or for anyone else who likes the language.

The Latin Dictionary app was written by Joshua Hayes. Jonathan Lane drew the icon.

Pros and cons of Latin Dictionary app for iPhone and iPad

Latin Dictionary app good for

Nothing fancy interface-wise here, but the app merits 5 stars simply because it is one of the few Latin eDictionaries out there that gives you full access to a true Latin Dictionary. Moreover, Lews & Short, as stated in the description, is a great resource for medievalists, as it extends into the Late Antique period, providing meanings not found in Classical dictionaries. The app itself is simple and easy to use, with a nice, clean display for definitions. The only suggestion Id make for a new version would be an option to search only after a word is fully typed in. As it is now, each keystroke causes the program to search through its word list for matches, which can slow things down a touch. But that is only a minor quibble. Thanks to the developer for making this app and making it available at a reasonable price.
If you are studying latin this app will save you loads of time! The Lewis and Short dictionary is the essential dictionary for medieval latinists, and equal to other classical dictionaries. You could pay hundreds of dollars for a full physical copy of this, and to be honest, the quick interface on this electronic version is so much quicker than using a book. I have nothing but high praises for this app! Also I find the guessing feature in the search function very useful, please keep it! Thanks for an excellent app!
Lewis & Short is still the standard work for medievalists. This is a great app and its a lot lighter than lugging around your bound copy, which one still needs (duh!) but can use when necessary. For the price its amazing. Too bad we cant get Latham and Bradleys Arnold too.
This app is great for looking up the meanings of latin words and the guessing feature helps to narrow possibilities when youre not sure of the root youre looking for. Could we get the appendix to explain the abbreviations? Everything thing else is already perfect.
This is the Lewis & Short Latin Dictionary, which has been *the* standard Latin-English dictionary for generations. It is by far the biggest, most complete Latin Dictionary that Ive seen available for iPhone. The app is simple to use, and the text is easy to read. Use the iPhone/iPod "Settings" button to adjust the text size. The L&S often includes the corresponding Greek term in its definitions; unfortunately the Greek is printed in "betacode," that is, in Roman letters. At first I could not figure out how to scroll through the list of words, but its a simple matter of pressing the "Search" key. This is a great app at a fantastic price. Latin lovers, even serious students and scholars, will be well-pleased.
First, it has a bunch of junk in the definition, if the definition is even there Second, lots of the words I look up are there, but dont have a definition. It gives the part-of-speech, but doesnt give the English meaning. Third, you cant look up the infinitive of any verb, and I dont see a way to find a verb definition at all! I just wasted 2 bux!

Some bad moments

This app simply does not work! You cant even type a search term!
Would be much more useful if it also translated from English to Latin! Pity. The user interface is also a little stark. This would otherwise be a very interesting dictionary for the price.
I really had high hopes. 2 bucks seemed too cheap and it was. Buy the 5 dollar one. Not enough words, WAY too long defenition if its even in there. Complete epic fail! Lost 2 dollars.
Why the hell doesnt this app work, I type something in, press Search, AND NOTHING HAPPENS!!!.
Worst app Ive found so far. Dont buy if youre a law student. Most words I searched for werent available.
One star unless you add English to Latin. Otherwise it is useless to me.
